From Little Acorns…
Unearthing the roots of Britain’s woodland conservation movement.
Founded in Devon in 1972 with the aim of saving woods and planting trees and run on a voluntary basis for the first five years, the Woodland Trust was to become Britain’s largest woodland conservation charity. In 1977 John James joined as the first employee with the job of developing the Trust’s work nationally. When he stepped down twenty years later the Trust owned more than 800 woods throughout the UK and was acquiring a new wood every week.
With the launch of its Woodland Rescue Campaign in 1980 the Trust rapidly became one of the most successful fundraising charities in the country. In From Little Acorns … John James sets out to identify some of the reasons for what has been described as one of conservation’s “surprise successes”.
Looking back over the first 25 years there was, throughout, a sense of urgency for the cause of woodland conservation in the face of serious threats. The Trust employed an entrepreneurial and opportunistic approach. For a quarter of a century, it positioned itself ready for the “next big thing” from “Plant a Tree in ‘73” through the Millennium Forests to The Big Climate Fightback. This book explores the making of the Woodland Trust and provides a link to what has today become Britain’s foremost woodland conservation charity.

…tells the powerful tale of how it all began

An interesting and readable book
Jonathan Spencer, British Wildlife
A personal account as well as a history, From Little Acorns… goes further, setting the context within which the Trust was operating as Britain emerged from post war austerity into the “Locust Years” of the 60s and 70s. It was the loss of trees, hedgerows and woods from the landscape that led to the Trust’s formation, that shaped its straightforward aims of creating or securing woods and, ultimately, its extraordinary success.
Well illustrated and well written in an engaging fashion…well worth purchasing
Malcolm Smith, British Ornithologists’ Union
The book is a very personal journey for John James. Ken Watkins inspired the formation of the Woodland Trust, but it was James who succeeded in developing it into one of our leading conservation charities. It has arguably achieved more than any other to retain and improve vital habitat for some of Britain’s most impressive wild plants and animals.
Hilary Allison, Forestry Commissioner
It is clear from reading this book the important role the Woodland Trust played in building momentum in the practical delivery of social and environmental benefits of woods and trees…. and in urban forestry and community engagement. These achievements deserve to be widely recognised.
Gillian Reynolds, CBE, Journalist
You really achieved wonders over two challenging decades and it’s heartening to read them in From Little Acorns…, reminding us that positive action is powerful in a world obsessed with trivia.
